At Behavioral Wellness Clinic we offer numerous groups for different issues. Please read below to see if one of these group options would be good for you. Please CONTACT US if you would like to sign up or have any questions about any of the offerings.

Current Groups at Behavioral Wellness Clinic

1. Daily: Meal Therapy Groups

This group meets at 8am for Breakfast and 12pm for Lunch every day, Monday - Friday. Evening meal therapy groups meet at 5pm Monday - Thursday.

Meal therapy can help to reduce unhealthy or negative associations with food. During meals, individuals will sit with a therapist, who will aid them in practicing normalized eating and will challenge some of the individual’s food fears. The therapist will also help in processing any negative thoughts and feelings they might have in a safe, structured environment.This group is designed to restore and maintain healthy weight.

Fee: $45-75 per meeting.

2. Mondays and Tuesdays, Various Times: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Skills Groups

Dialectical behavioral therapy can help reduce unhealthy behaviors and thought processes and behaviors, and improve your overall social and behavioral functioning. These 12 week skills groups will teach you this skills to improve your quality of life. We offer three kinds of groups:

  1. Mondays at 10am and Thursdays at 6pm: IOP DBT Group led by Lindsay James, CSW. This group is held every Tuesday at 10am and Thursday at 6pm for patients in our intensive-outpatient program. Fee is $45 per meeting.
  2. Tuesdays at 4pm: Adult General Non-ED Group led by Dr. Mark Schirmer, PsyD. This group is held every Tuesday at 4pm Fee is $75 per meeting.
  3. Tuesdays at 5pm: Adult Eating Disorder Group led by Irina Vanzhula, M.S. This group is held every Tuesday at 5pm Fee is $45 per meeting.

3. Mondays at 11am: Interpersonal Processing Group:

This group meets every other Monday at 11am with Lindsay James, CSW.

Fee: $45 per meeting.

4. Mondays at 4pm: Cooking Group:

This group meets every Monday at 4pm with Michelle Eckhart, RD.

Learning to cook for yourself is an essential life skill. To be well and live a balanced like, we need to learn how to incorporate all foods that we enjoy into what we eat every day. Having a strained relationship with food can make preparing food for ourselves challenging and scary. Let us help you become more comfortable with food again by practicing some new cooking skills by preparing a variety of recipes. Class will include an entree and sides which we will enjoy together when the meal is complete!

Fee: $45 per meeting.

5. Mondays at 5pm: Mindfulness Meditation Group:

This group meeting time is 5pm; it is led by Dr. Broderick Sawyer, PsyD.

What this group offers in particular is direct instruction on mindfulness-meditation, and how to use mindfulness meditation to: 1) understand how your “thinking mind” has the potential to increase or decrease stress, 2) experience emotions without becoming overwhelmed, and 3) develop more positivity and compassion towards yourself, your life, and those around you.

Fee: $45 per meeting.

6. Mondays at 6pm: Eating Disorder Exposure Group:

This group meets every Monday at 6pm with Amanda Velez, MFT.

Instruction is provided on the cycle of distressing thoughts that often produce intense urges to neutralize unwanted feelings in an unhealthy manner. The group clinician teaches clients how to tolerate these urges using a treatment approach commonly associated with behavioral therapies for anxiety and obsessive- related disorders.

Fee: $45 per meeting.

7. Mondays at 6pm: New Vision Group:

This group meets every other Monday at 6pm with Dr. Mark Schirmer, PsyD and Sara Sutphin, MEd, LPP.

This group is for adults that have struggled with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or a similar issue. The group focuses on issues that can be barriers to treatment progress, such as feelings of isolation, loneliness, social withdrawal, stress, family and relationship discord, untrustworthiness, lack of motivation, difficulty making decisions, and being overwhelmed. This group enables members to recognize that they are not alone with experiencing these issues and begin to build rapport with others. In addition, members learn healthy coping strategies to feel more empowered in their lives and improve work and social relationships.

Fee: $45 per meeting.

8. Mondays at 6pm: Mindful Self Compassion Group:

This group meeting time is 6pm; it is led by Dr. Broderick Sawyer, PsyD.

Mindful Self-Compassion, or MSC, is a group designed to directly remove shame and self-blame, and has been shown by research to improve psychiatric symptoms. Along with self-compassion skills taught during group, you will receive meditation instruction, reading lists, and a host of other resources to truly become your own best friend.

Fee: $45 per meeting.

9. Tuesdays at 10am: Eating Disorder Thoughts Group:

This group meets every Tuesday at 10am with Dr. Cheri Levinson.

The group focuses on the interplay between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors for each individual and their eating disorder. participants learn to identify unhelpful thoughts and ways to challenge them. Sessions may also incorporate acceptance-based strategies designed to change the individual’s relationship with their thoughts.

Fee: $75 per meeting.

10. Tuesdays at 5:30pm: Mindful Eating Group:

This group meets every Tuesday at 5:30pm with Mary Curnutte, RD.

Participants will learn and practice strategies to apply mindfulness to eating and food choices. We will consider hunger, fullness, satiety, taste satisfaction, emotional eating, and favorite foods. Individuals will explore the basic skills that support a mindful eating practice and increase the capacity to fully and accurately experience food and eating.

Fee: $45 per meeting.

11. Wednesdays at 10am: Eating Disorder Exposure Group:

This group meets every Wednesday at 10am with Dr. Street Russell, PsyD.

12. Wednesdays at 1pm: Outpatient Cooking Class:

This group meets every Wednesday at 1pm with Michelle Eckhart, RD.

13. Wednesdays at 5:30pm: Adult Relapse Prevention Group:

This group meets every second or third Wednesday of the month at 5:30pm with Dr. Street Russell, PsyD, HSPP.

This 90-minute group is for adults currently in treatment for OCD, anxiety, or depression. The focus is on learning techniques to inhibit relapse following or during treatment. This is a therapist-facilitated group for support, encouragement, and camaraderie.

Fee: $65 per meeting.

14. Mondays (May 6, 20; June 3, 17, 2019) at 6pm: Eating Disorder Family Education Nights:

This group meets every other Monday at 6pm with Lindsay James, CSW.

These group meetings are designed for family members only. Topics covered will include understanding the diagnosis, treatment, how to help, what is not helpful, communication skills, and much more. Please join us to learn and ask questions about navigating this challenging time. Attending all four sessions is recommended as the information does build on the previous sessions.

Fee: $45 per meeting.

15. Thursdays at 10am: Body-Image Group:

This group meets every Thursday at 10am with Sara Sutphin, MEd, LPP.

In this confidential group setting, you will be able to work through these negative feelings and build a more positive sense of self about yourself and your body. We encourage you to join us for this clinician-led group and find support from others struggling with the same feelings.

Fee: $75 per meeting.

16. Fridays at 10am: Adult Perfectionism Group:

This group meets every Friday at 10am with Dr. Alex Pruitt, PsyD.

This CBT therapy group is especially targeted for adults with eating disorders. Participants will learn about the upsides and downsides of perfectionism and will learn to identify perfectionistic behaviors and thoughts. Participants will learn strategies to cope with these thoughts and behaviors using a cognitive behavioral framework. People struggling with all types of perfectionism are welcome to participate in this therapist-facilitated forum for psycho education, support, and encouragement.

Fee: $75 per meeting.

17. Fridays at 4pm: Inner Radiance Group:

This group meets every other Friday at 4pm with Sara Sutphin, MEd, LPP.

The Inner Radiance Group is for individuals dealing with trichotillomania (hair pulling) and/or excoriation (skin picking). The group will discuss compensatory and healthy coping strategies. The group is also designed to engender more social engagement and expression of thoughts and feelings.
